 Daly City Forklift Masts - Called the "Gateway to the Peninsula", Daly City is located on San Mateo County's northern edge. The limits of the city stretch from the Pacific Ocean on the west all the way to the San Francisco Bay, which is east of the city. It is conveniently located in the middle of two of the largest job growth zones within California, the San Francisco and San Mateo counties. Though the financial system within the area is very diverse, the main sectors are in small business, retail and healthcare.
The financial system is mostly dependent on the retail sector. Daly City has three main shopping areas within its limits, the biggest being Serramonte Center with a total of 860,000 square feet dedicated to retail space. The Mission Street retail corridor, that borders San Francisco, and the Westlake shopping centre (that offers 620,000 square feet of retail space) are the two other major regional shopping areas. The city has over 3.1 million square feet of retail space, and out of all the cities within the county Daly City has the largest taxable retail sales.
Within Daly City, the next largest sector of the financial system is the medical industry. The Seton Medical Center is the largest employer within the city, with about 1,500 workers. There are 357 beds inside the hospital, and it holds the reputation for being one of the leading medical facilities in the United States. There are several other medical institutions within the area, such as the San Fransisco Neuro-Skeletal Imaging center, Physician's Medical center, San Fransisco Heart Institute, Spine Care Medical Group and Seton Medical Office. The newest facility in the area is the Kaiser Permanente, that has 130,000 square feet of medical clinics and offices. It can be found at 395 Hickey Boulevard near the I-280.
Due to the closeness of educational institutes, the individuals from the area tend to be well educated. There are six colleges or universities in a ten mile radius and another twelve more educational institutes could be found in a 50-mile radius.
The population of Daly City is mostly over the age of 18, 78 percent with the median age being around 35. Surprisingly, just 12% of the population is over sixty. Nearly 50% of the total labor force work in local jobs.
